For dogs that love to dig, it is fun for you and for them to make them a
"sandbox" or digging area. It is a great way to give them something to do
during the day. It needs to be pretty deep and large enough for them to fit
comfortably in. And you may want to get special sand to keep them cleaner.
Then instead of stopping the behavior, you give them a safe and allowable
place to dig instead. Just make sure when you start this that you block off
the areas you don't want them to get to when you are not around. When you are
around, go play with them in the sandbox and teach them that is the only
place it is ok to dig.
To keep them really happy and excited there, bury stuff like toys, Kongs,
Tupperware with treats, chewers and encourage them to dig to find this stuff!
