I don't know the whole story behind the woman you met in the vet's  
office, Katie, and what she's tried and not tried with her basset.  
But if it were me, if my regular vet advised me to do something as  
drastic as amputate any part of my dog's body, I'd ask for a referral  
to a veterinary specialist, preferably one at a vet school. Whether  
it be an oncologist, an orthopedist, or another type of speciality,  
I'd want a second opinion from someone who specializes in the area of  
medicine my dog requires. Someone who has much more highly targeted  
knowledge, expertise, and experience than my nice-but-necessarily- 
limited general practitioner.
