My kids have all been raised with dogs and they are not afraid of them, large or small. Bassets are not typically aggressive, but our dwarfed coonhound Walter tries to be top dog among the hounds here. Well, my 9 1/2 yr old daughter, who is pretty petite-- wearing a size 6/7 still--, saved her best friend's little brother today, and I credit her knowledge of dogs' pack behavior and ability to be in charge of any and all fosters we have. A neighbor's dog was running around on her friend Caroline's property in the country (Juliana spent the night there.) It's a large lab that is very friendly--even swims with Caroline and her little brother in their pool. Well today it was decidely UNfriendly and for no apparent reason, ran over, knocked little Anthony (he's 5) off his bike and started attacking him. Caroline's mom froze and screamed, Caroline screamed, and my little girl raced across the yard, hauled that big dog off him, picked up Anthony and ran as fast as she could up to the house! She shows aboslutely no fear at anything--which is probably what that dog realized. All of our dogs here recognize us as the Alphas--we haven't had a dog be aggressive to any of us (to each other, maybe, but not to humans.) So Anthony has some puncture wounds to his back and shoulder and Juliana said she got a few scratches, but otherwise she's fine and no, she wasn't scared at all, she said :)
