Well Stinky (oops, sorry, I mean Barkley) had a very exciting evening. Once I realized he was sprayed, outside on to the deck he went. The first article I found on the internet said to bathe in Listerine (and the most accessible item I had in my house was the Listerine method). Bathe him (mom, that does not mean to use 8 gallons of pure Listerine on me - Barkley) in the Listerine, then rinse off and bathe him with doggie shampoo. We followed all the steps, while I the madwoman emptied every Listerine bottle in the house and sent my DH for more at the 24 hour grocery store (it was after all late at night). Poor Stinky spent the night in his crate, for fear that he would spread his stink all over the house. He was not happy to say the least. He hasn't had his crate locked on him in years. His normal bedtime spot is in bed with my teenage daughter. This morning I called the vet and they confirmed that I had actually done the hard part (bathe him in "something") and
that a groomer would only do it over again. They did recommend the Peroxide method though to clear the stink. So today after canvassing 2 drugstores for the peroxide I needed, I came home and took care of what needed to be washed. Before I did the Peroxide I sniffed out Stinky (mom, stop calling me that, my name is BARKLEY!), and noticed that he only had a faint skunk smell on one ear. So technically the Listerine method worked very well as far as I am concerned. As a precaution I still did the peroxide method on his left side (ear and chest) - the stinky side. He is now out on the deck "sunning" himself dry. Hopefully it worked. If anyone is interested - the recipe my vet recommended was this:

  1 quart of Hydrogen Peroxide
  1/4 cup baking soda
  1 teaspoon dishwashing liquid
1 tablespoon of Vanilla Extract (yup, the recommended this) - Mom - I smell like a cookie now.
Rubber Gloves (I wish I thought of that last night - now my hands of a faint "skunk" smell to them).

They said to apply on a dry dog, leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse off. They also recommended doing it again in a week if needed.

Well hopefully that is the end to our skunk meeting. I can't do another late night.

Tina and Stinky (oops, sorry, Barkley)
