I love martingale collars, but I do have one warning. (Sorry for all you folks who have heard this story before, but there are plenty of new folks on the drool who probably haven't.)

One day as I was taking our Belvedere to the vet, Jane and Alexis decided they wanted to go out too. They managed to slip out the door as I was trying to get Bel out. Both ran down the street. Alexis had severe arthritis, so she didn't get far. But Jane darted down the street, towards the major road at the foot of our hill. A man at the bottom of the street managed to grab her, but since he didn't get the right part of the martingale collar, she slipped right out of it. Of course she headed out over the busy street. Thank God, no car was coming.

That being said, when you can use a martingale properly, it's the only way to go with a basset.
