One thing to consider with bloating symptoms is Inflamatory Bowel Disease 
(IBD).  It is very common in bassets.  My Bogart had repeated Bloat episodes 
2 years ago to varying degrees (none with twisting thank goodness).  He 
finally went to the specialist who did an endoscopy (scope to check throat 
and stomach and take biopsys).  He was very postive for both IBD and H 
Pylori bacteria (whose significance in dogs is widely debated).  He is now 
on a prescription diet, budesinide and pepcid daily, and had the H pylori 
treated.  He does great with only rare bloating episodes (now only related 
to times that he steals food from my 2 leggers that is illegal in his diet- 
like pizza) or when he needs to be on an antibiotic for some reason.
