[Dailydrool] Just a Dog

I suppose that an overwhelming majority of us are on this list because we don't think of our Bassets as "just a dog". Don't get me wrong, I know my Bassets aren't human children, just as my son and daughter aren't dogs. (and the rabbit isn't a cat and the cat isn't a turtle and so on). Just because Pip and Sean walk on 4 legs and not on 2 like Johnny and Shannon doesn't make them any less important. I live with animals in my home because they ground me-they give me an overwhelming sense of peace, they make me laugh and sometimes yes, just like my human housemates, they make me cry or want to scream and tear my hair out. As humans we domesticated these creatures some thousands of years ago as companions, for hunting partners and protection. Supposedly being at the top of the food chain, we as humans are resposible for their care now. And if that means the "dog" sleeps on the livingroom chair so be it. I am no more a slave to my Bassets than I am
to my children or anyone else in my life for that matter. A life is a life whether it be a kritter with two legs or four, feathers, fur, or scales. I like to think that I'm making the world a better place by raising human children who know how to be compassionate to all creatures human, canine, feline, or otherwise. So if that makes me a silly slave count me in-that's a banner I'll proudly wear!

Deb-proud slave to the Bassets-Pippi and Sean, the turtles-Franklin and Catdog, the cat-Katie, and the bunny-Prince
