[Dailydrool] Prozac being used for separation anxiety

There have recently been studies that show that the drug fluoxetine
hydrochloride (Prozac/Reconcile) is extremely effective in reducing incidences of
separation anxiety in dogs when used with a behavior modification program.

Reconcile is the drug now available specifically for veterinary use.

It is not for every dog and some vets are reluctant to prescribe this
because it must be followed up with behavior modification to be effective. At the
same time, many trainers I know will no longer take on separation anxiety
cases unless the clients get their dogs on this drug because it makes such a
huge difference to the behavior modification success. Some dogs will stay on
the drug, some will stay on only until the problem is under control and then
will be weaned off of the drug slowly in consultation with both vet and
trainer. This is not a drug you can simply give when you feel like it. It must be
taken as prescribed and also if you decide to stop, you must take the dog off
the drug in conjunction with your vet.

So if you are having a problem with separation anxiety, do speak with your
vet about this and find a good trainer or behaviorist who has worked with other
dogs with good results and see what they recommend. The trainer and the
vet must work together in order for your dog to get the best results.
