[Dailydrool] Babies and dogs

Almost every time I have bought a baby home, there has been an established dog in the home.
My son came home to share his life with a very old afghan, who had never had children around her. She sniffed him in my arms and settled down. She came and told me if she heard him crying (no, they were never left alone together) and he learned to walk holding on to her enourmous rear.

Daughter one came home to a dogless home. By the time she was walking, it was clear she was absolutely terrified of dogs. So much so, I was worried she would run under a car to avoid one. So I got little Goorgie, a whippet lurcher. This time it was the child who mothered the puppy.

Georgie was five when Child three turned up. Once again she never showed anything other than mild interest, moving on to playmates as Tilly grew.

Interestingly, the only one of my children who is not dog-centric is child two - but that's better than terrified - and actually, she adores Rolph - except the days he steals her food or underwear.

Babies and dogs are a good thing. Just be careful to supervise without giving off over-anxious signals. And include both with each other, letting them both understand boundaries.

Sally, with Rolph and Clara, UK
