Yesterday, Sat 7th June, was the day that the UK Basset Hound Club (Midland
Branch) held its annual Fun Day. Although it is held for all Bassets,
traditionally it has become the day when all Rescue Bassets bring their slaves along
to enjoy the day and its light-hearted competitions (& some not so light
hearted)!
The day was fine but with rain never far away; this is  England remember;
although it never really arrived. At the final count around 150 Bassets arrived
and the whole field was soon a mass of waving tails and melodious sounds.
The programme started off with a demonstration of and qualification for the
Good Citizen Dog Award. Several Bassets entered and several passed the tests.
Then to the serious business with the Puppy Parade first, this attracted
twenty entries the youngest being just 14 weeks old. Next came the competitions
for the best Rescue dog and then bitch, there were 22 entries for both of
these.
The judge, a Kennel Club official, gave each hound a thorough check also
asking questions about their history. She seemed to take an age to make up her
mind but unfortunately Dylan did not make the final stand (so what, we know he
is wonderful).
Next to the Rescue bitches, the same procedure, lots of questions and much
examination.
This time POPPY WON and so regained her crown and title which she won last
in 2004 and is I am led to believe the only hound to have won it twice. As
well as her winners rosette she will hold the trophy for twelve months and she
also received a big bag of treats.
Later on in the Veteran's Class (10 yearsand over) Dylan took the third
prize so maybe he won't feel too bad about his sister. The star of the Veteran
Class was Fred who is sixteen and still going strong if just a little arthritic.
All the hounds received a bag of treats, most of which did not survive the
journey back to the car.
The organisers, Midland Branch committee deserve a big round of applause for
their superb organisation, everything went off like clockwork.
