I am not a vet, nurse, physician, or any kind of medically trained personnel, but I found myself wondering whether Maggie's sore could be packed. This is what I had to do for an open, post-surgical sore in the leg of my mentally disabled sister-in-law a few years back. Her wound also had to be kept open to heal from the inside out. I was the designated family member to care for it. I was instructed to flush out the sore with saline water twice a day, and then gently lay in sterile surgical gauze pads, wrapping the entire leg with light gauze to keep the packing in when I had filled up the wound. Because of the packing, the wound didn't scab over, and in fact did heal from the inside out--Each week less packing was needed unitl finally the wound was healed level with the outside skin., I wonder wether this technique would work for Maggie's sore. Picking off scabs and testing the depth of the wound with a Q-tip sounds so "ouchy" to me. I can't imagine my
sister-in-law having tolerated that... Might be worth asking your vet if packing the wound with sterile dressings that you change daily would work ian Maggie's situation. Val
