Puppy Mill Releases Dogs: “The Arkansas 11”
The Hounds Head Home to New York
Father’s day weekend, the Ozark Mountain Basset Rescue in Arkansas was contacted by a puppy mill owner, stating that he was shutting down. This area is unfortunately known for these mills. The owner’s proposition was this, “ there are eleven dogs, (Bassets) if you can’t take them in one week, some will be sold off, ( most likely to other puppy mill’s,) and the older one’s will be shot.”
With a statement like that, who could say no? Beautiful pure bred Basset Hounds, when you think of them, the only thing that comes to mind is the long ears and the irresistible face. Who could destroy these creatures, much yet operate a puppy mill? With that in mind, Ozark couldn’t turn them down, even though they were not in shape to take these dogs in at the time, they needed help, and fast!
Ozarks’ director quickly turned to other rescues looking for help, only to be told that they too could not take on such a feat. Ozark was worried, the thought of having to make the phone call to say they couldn’t do it was heart wrenching. There was one last outlet, to make a call all the way to Rochester, New York to a non profit organization, ABC Basset Hound Rescue.
The contact was made and within seconds of getting off the phone, ABC’s chairman, Gary Penny, was on the internet and making calls trying to find as many people as possible to help get these dogs out of that situation. The influx of replies and acceptances through the organization was nothing short of a miracle! These dogs are coming to New York!
ABC has rescued over 420 dogs in only seven years. All dogs taken in are neutered or spayed and given a clean bill of health before being adopted. Rescuing the Arkansas 11 is simply worded as , “ a huge challenge.”
But because Ozark stepped up to help ABC and got the dogs out Saturday, June 21st, they are now being treated and given much needed veterinary care at the cost of ABC, who will be driving from Rochester, NY. to Troy, Illinois this Thursday, June 26th, to meet with Ozark and transport all of the hounds to various foster home locations in Buffalo, Rochester and the Syracuse areas.
When the hounds have all been relocated to their foster homes, the foster families will then begin the task of training and giving these dogs much needed love and proper care. When the foster families and coordinators feel that the hounds are ready to move forward they will be put up for adoption and placed in a home that has been well referenced and approved. Upstate New York is about to have eleven more beautiful bassets ready to find a place on your couch and in your heart!
