My time honored wiseass response to the 'why Bassets?' inquiries:   
Several years ago, my ex-wife (a Black Lab/GSD kinda gal), told me  
"Bassets are dumb."  Clinched it for me.

For those of us with an OEBE in residence, the intelligence question  
is met with another: "How the hell did she get into that?"
