Your boy Barney may have (forgive the misspelling) Idiopathic Vestibular Disease; in other words an idiopathic, or unknown disorder, that causes the eyes to dart up and down or from side to side and loss of balance. Our 13-year old Sophie has an occasional bout of it but with rest, it goes away on its own very quickly. I, too thought she had had a stroke. It was very scary. Have your vet check for any bacterial infections. Sophie seemed to have an IVD bout when she had a raging bacterial infection from eating the neighbors rotting apples from their apple tree that fell in our backyard..
