Well, Samantha and Baxter never did this, but Dad's little pug, Maggie did that kick thing ALL the time!  It was so comical to see her do this when a neighbor dog (usually much larger than she was!) came into view. Her neck would stiffen, the fur on her back went up and then the back legs kicked out--we used to call her the bada*& little puggie!
