Lots of folks have bells hanging by the door, and train their houndie to nudge it when they go to the door.  We have a "doggy doorbell" that Frank uses, but our timid Sarah is afraid of it, so she bangs on the door with her foot when she wants to go out.  She bangs loudly enough to hear, and it also makes scratches on the door - oh well, at least she goes out.
