[Dailydrool] Prices of puppies

I have been reading the comparative prices of puppies on the mainland with interest. I live in Hawaii, an island state in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, with restrictive quarantine requirements for animals entering the state. Here, mixed breed puppies are sold in pet stores for $1000+; purebred puppies from backyard breeders generally cost between $1200 and $5000. I don't know how much breeders charge, as I know no breeders here (and there are no more basset breeders locally, although there used to be two). We do have dog shows, and there are reputable and dedicated breeders of breeds other than bassets here still--I just don't know any. So I don't know what a show quality local purebred puppy would cost. The most popular breeds on our island appear to be chihuahuas and pitbulls. Our Humane Society is extremely inexpensive and a wonderful organization--$60 for an adoption; but puppies are a rarity at the humane society. When there are puppies
available, it is not unusual to have lines outside the HHS before it opens of people hoping to adopt. That being said, we still have far too many dogs past puppyhood looking for good homes.
