My heart goes out to this hound who lost her home in time for the holidays. It's not as uncommon as one would hope to think it. A little earlier than this time of year we took in our Alexis as a foster. She was 10 years old when her humans moved and decided she did not fit in with their new life.

I believe the real reason Lex was dumped was that she had a pseudomonas infection in her ears and a tumor on one shoulder. No care had been given to these issues, as far as I could tell. You could smell her ears across the room, she was so stinky. Tri-State did a great job of getting her health issues fixed. We took her to the vets and specialists, and I treated her ears until she died.

After Alexis came here, she was constantly looking for her humans. The first night she went to our door, trying to go home again. For months afterwards she'd go up to vans and trucks, so I assume that's what her humans had driven. My heart broke for this beautiful, well-behaved girl whose only "crime" was to love the unloving. The only good thing these humans did was to give her to rescue. In a shelter, she would have been immediately killed.

We fostered Lex for about a year and a half, until we could afford to add a third dog to our family. Then we adopted her. She shared two and a half wonderful years of her life with us. I only wish it could have been more. When she died of lung cancer, I wondered if that was another problem she'd gotten from the bad habits of the original humans.

I will always be glad we opened our home to Alexis. The other humans' loss was our gain. But Tri-State will never let me know who those people were, or someone may have to bail me out of jail.
