[Dailydrool] Sleeping Dogs

A nickzillion years ago, I was hospitalized and my doc came in early one
morning and touched me to wake me up. I came up swinging and caught him on
the jaw. After that he touched my toes to wake me up. When my kids lived
at home, I had them trained to bring me a Diet Coke, leave it on the
nightstand, and call to me from the door. They understood that I was not
safe to be close to when I first wake up. My husband, after 40+ years, is
finally trained not to wake me up abruptly.

I afford the same courtesy to my dogs. I always call their name and make
sure their eyes are open before I touch them. When I have an old basset
with poor hearing, I make sure to do something that causes vibration to wake
them more gently. No animals like to be startled awake - it initiates a
"fight or flight" response, raises the blood pressure too quickly and is
generally irritating.
