[Dailydrool] newbie

hi all -  i am a soon-to-be basset owner (moses comes home on sept. 20). i've been following all of your posts for a couple of months now and getting some great facts and advice in preperation for our pup's homecoming! 
 
i have a couple of questions as i start to stock up the house for our little one. 
 
do you recommend a harness for a puppy rather than a collar ... for walking purposes? also, does any one have an opinion about open metal crates vs. the one ones the partially enclosed plastic ones? 
 
i'm sure i'll have many more questions in the coming weeks ... but just wanted to introduce myself and throw those two inquiries out there.
