I have recently had some communications about bassets who are either
experiencing extreme separation anxiety or demonstrating aggression.

I have been studying both of these problems with very experienced dog
trainers who have worked with these issues in detail for many years. Even as I
continue to study these issues, I must tell you all that if someone contacts me
and asks me to work with dogs like this, I refer them to people much more
experienced than I am, and I am dedicating a big part of my life right now to
research and actually observing and assisting people who do work with these
dogs.

This is NOT something to try to fix by yourself in the home or with the
trainer at Petsmart. No offense to the trainers at Petsmart. They are great for
normal behavior issues.

If your dog is injuring themselves or is a danger to others, it is really
critical that you find experienced help as soon as you can. If a dog had a
medical problem, you would rush them to the vet. These are extreme behavioral
problems that often result in the loss of life to the dog and possible injury
to others. They need to be rushed to a professional before it is too late.

A good place to start to look for help with this, is your local basset
rescue group. Then hopefully, they are either going to get your dog to a
certified veterinary behaviorist or to a very experienced trainer who works in
conjunction with a veterinarian. Or they need to take the problem dog and help
you with it.

Here is a list of Certified Veterinary Behaviorists.

(http://www.animalbehavior.org/ABSAppliedBehavior/caab-directory) These people will consult with you, get your
dog on any needed appropriate medication, and get you a trainer to work with
you locally.

Best to you, there is hope for extreme problem dogs.
