>From time to time there is discussion on the Drool about the pros and cons of dogs wearing collars in the house and elsewhere. The solution that I have found works for us. Both of my hounds are microchipped. But they also wear collars with name, address, phone number tags on them. This was very handy when Bo escaped about a month ago and was returned to my door by a friendly policeman.

However, the collars are quite wide, made of nylon, with buckle closures, and are worn like necklaces-- loose enough that the collars sit around the dogs' necks at the very base of their necks resting on their shoulder blades, really, and loose enough that they can easily slip over the dogs' heads if caught on anything, but not so loose that they simply fall off when the dogs have their heads down. Both Bo and Harley can easily back out of the collars, which slide easily over their heads, so they are no good either for walking or grabbing hold of. Basically they are just identification "jewelry". The dogs only slip off the collars if they are moving in the opposite direction that the collar is moving and something else has hold of the collar, which almost never happens (but would happen if the collar got snagged on something).

For walks, I use a one-piece slip collar/leash made out of thick, soft, nylon rope. The leashes are kind of like show leashes but way thicker and softer. I got mine at our grocery store, made by Hartz, but I think I have seen similar ones in either the Drs. Foster and Smith catalog or the LL. Bean catalog. (I have never seen them in pet shops.)
