Annika - the House of Puddles is a wonderful place, thanks to your friend, Marilyn.  She reminds me very much of my friend Kim Dunn who headed the basset rescue group here for many years, MidAmericaBassetRescue(MABR) from whom we were united w/Sadie who left us 4 yrs ago at age 12 and now Raymond.  Sadie was one of  the first rescues made by MABR.  Now, at this time, Kim lives in Oskaloosa, KS and runs the Senior Basset Ranch,(BassetsRUs) where she, too, houses and loves 18 senior bassets.  Her most recent guest is a diabetic basset, who will need special attention, which she's arranging for now. Kim heads the St. Patrick's Day Parade Basset McWaddle in a lovely section of Kansas City, MO, every year, the Saturday aft. before Mar 17.  It's great to get all the bassets from MABR together from Iowa, KS, MO and Nebraska and it's quite an honor to have the bassets bring up the rear of the parade every year.

I'll be meeting Kim this week, and we'll pick up some specialties for our SP Peaches. Please give Marilyn my warmest regards, and we hope she's very successful in her woderful House of
Puddles.                     Beryl & Raymond

Lilly was barking at something, she was rolling in the grass, I told her
come Lilly, she was ignoring she was having fun with something, then by time
I got down to the grass she got stung! she ran off then started rolling in
another part of the yard and barking. Of course I got there faster with a
possible ankle stress fracure, then daddy did even when I was yelling for
him to help me (men sometimes! lol)

I got down there with shovel in hand and it was one of those big fuzzy
bees.  Not sure what kind but not a wasp, but as big as a dime or nickle.
I have benadryl but didn't by tabs (DUMB MOMMY) I had gotten the capsules.
She is probably about 40something maybe almost 50 lbs so I opted to give her
one 25mg because I am not sure if she is quite 50lbs.  Then after I gave it
to her realized it was expired ERRRR!! 1/2009...heard mostly the potency
will be less.  She is acting normal and was running aroudn with Santana had
to calm her down in case so she is not breathing crazy because of her
running (she runs like a grey hound!)
Will keep an eye on her.  Never saw a bee like this just buzzin around but
not up close like that! eek!!!  They are getting ready to eat now.

Hi, Honey was on tramadol an deramaxx, because a back  injury, and she was
shaking from the pain.  My vet put her on it, for just  4 days, and she was
fine.  then we went to the therapist for her back, to  get her measured for
a cart, and to see if she was going to be able to walk  again.  Her back
legs went out. Anyway, the therapist told us to continue  the tramadol, every
day, every 8 hrs. even for at night sleeping, and a deramaxx  every other
day, even though she wasn't in pain, that I could  tell.
Well, that was Wed........Thursday she started  throwing up, then seemed
kind of ok, so like a dummy I did the tramadol and the  deramaxx once again
this morning, and she has thrown up about 4 times now today.  I talked to my
regular vet, and he said STOP the tramadol and deramaxx  immediately.  She
had to take clavamax for a UTI she got from the tramadol.  So now for 24 hrs.
no food, she drank some water, and threw it up about 90  minutes later.  he
said let her just rest.  if she wants half a cup of  water before bed,
that's ok, if she wants it, otherwise let her just rest.  Needless to say my
stomach is in a knot, every time she moves I look at  her.  I am just praying
that on Saturday she will be ok again, so please,  droolers, some drool this
way would be greatly appreciated.....has anyone else  gone thru this with the
medication??????????  thanks so much  everyone..........

Daisy did not get a urinary tract infection from the Tramadol. The tramadol
is tough on the tummy. Deramaxx is an NSAID and is also tough on the tummy.
She may have gotten the UTI from being unable to empty her bladder because
she cannot stand, but the drugs themselves are not responsible for the
infection, bacteria is.

Ask your Vet about something to coat her esophagus and tummy. Ask about
Sucralfate and see if he thinks it might help. When Mitchell was on all the
drugs for his back he always had sucralfate AND cimetidine on board to avoid
exactly what you are running into.
My experience is also that Tramadol must taste really really incredibly,
unbelievably horribly bitter because it is one of the few drugs that almost
every dog I have ever known has not wanted to take, and that includes my
dogs, and others as well. I had to force it on the victims. Personally, I am
not convinced the benefits outweigh the risks unless the dog is in severe
pain.
At any rate you're right about letting her tummy rest.  Poor sweet Daisy.
Hang in there, both of you. We send comforting drool.

Lucy Lou the Wild Wonder Butt, OEBE, can smell TP in my car trunk when I
bring it home from the store, no matter what else is in there.  She will cry
softly until I lock it up in the cupboard, outside.  She still knows it's
there but she can't climb straight up the wall to get it...yet.

I just ordered a new supply of Cosequin DS for Sarah, and found a really good price on Countryside Pet Supply http://www.countrysidepet.com/ I saved about $35 over the place I usually order them from. Countryside has a 10% off special thru Aug 18, and that pretty much paid for the shipping. Email me privately if you want the promotional 10% off code.

A drooler (I think it was Robert??) recommended Cosequin DS a long time ago, and they've made a big difference in our arthritic Sweet Ol' Sarah.

I just read the very interesting post from Rose, Ann and Fred.  I do believe that bassets' sense of smell is so crucial.  Browser is still adapting and wanders around exploring every room as if it were a new place to learn.  His disposition remains ever so sweet and if this had happened to me, I am sure I would be growling and howling.  The opthamologist vet told us his retina was not damaged but there is some swelling of the fibers which surround the optic nerve.  She feels he may yet regain some of his sight in that eye.  If so, at that point she may put in a shunt to drain off the fluid.  His pressures have remained normal on the new and increased eyedrop regimen since the night of the pressure spike. She does not believe laser surgery is the answer as the results do not last.

However, we have resigned ourselves to the fact that his sight will not return.  I am thankful to so many of the Droolers who have e-mailed me back channel.  The support on this listserve means all the world to me.

A nice lady by the name of Stacy came to San Antonio today to see us.  She is from North Texas and helped us get out of that puppy mill last month.  She was petting me and even got down on the floor with me.  She sat and talked to Nancy too.  She watched me while I played with some stuffies and took some pictures of mememe.  Oh, okay, she took pictures of Nancy too.  She was so excited to see how good I looked since I put on some weight.

Holly Noelle BAROOED at Stacy & Dillon (her son) for a really long time.  The only time she stopped was when Dillon played with her ears.  He may be young, but he's been trained by Basset Hounds for a long time and knew how to get the loud mouth to be quiet :)   If you thought you heard thunder this afternoon it was probably just Holly!!

Stacy told me that she had kept one of the Hounds that used to live with me.  I was happy to hear that he had his own home now.  Nancy & I are still looking for homes, but I've been told that our Auntie Dawn will find us great homes, once we get to California.  Anyone looking for a senior Houndie to love????

I?m going to be speaking with someone whom I don?t know but who is looking
for information on bassets in general. She is thinking seriously about
adopting a 3 legged basset and I was wondering if anyone has any info or
actual experience with a basset missing one leg.

Any help will be appreciated,

Hello Fellow Droolers,

I just wanted to let everyone know that today is my Jack's 2nd Gotcha Day. My husband and I adopted him from Basset Buddies Rescue Inc. about a month after our vacation in 2007. Our other basset, Yowza, seemed kind of lonely and I  just plain wanted another one. So after some research I found Basset Buddies. I contacted them after looking through all the photos of available bassets. Jack actually wasn't our first choice but the great lady from the rescue thought Jack would be a better fit. We met Jack and fell in love. My husband was still a little skeptical but went a long anyway. A week later we picked up Jack and when the foster mom let him out he ran right to my husband, jumped up and laid the biggest sloppiest basset kiss ever. Jack and my husband have been inseperable ever since. I love watching the boys play together and run the basset 500. And it seems one can always tell when the other one needs cheering up or can sense when the other is gone.
 Now two years later we
are full fledged Basset slaves and we wouldn't have it any other way. Jack has filled our life with such joy. There really isn't anything like the love a basset hound can give you. Tonight I'm going to get Jack a special treat, frosty paws and a plain McDonalds cheeseburger. Of course he knows he has to share that cheeseburger with Yowza.

Snooters!
Sara
Slave to Yowza (yay I get some cheeseburger too) and Jack (oh boy oh boy I get special treat!)

I don't know what has happened to my sweet little Buttercup in the past couple of weeks. She has turned into a Basset I do not recognize. I truly believe she is trying out for membership in the OEBE. Here is the list of what she has done just in the last week:

    Chases the cat

    Chewed up numerous napkins

    Ate a potholder

Snatched a sandwich out of my hand (she had to jump up to get it) and ate it.

When I got up from the table to get a drink, she ate my dinner (with my husband watching and laughing his butt off when I saw what she'd done).

Peed on the floor as soon as she came from a walk.

Waits to poop on the floor until after her walk, also.

Steal toys right from under Bo's nose and snatches them right from his mouth and runs away with them. Then she won't let him have them back.

Has eaten the noses off of all the hedgehogs in the house (and there are many) and the feet off all the ducks.

When I take her for walks she always wants to go another way, or she stops and won't go any further for whatever reason.

She counter cruises and eats the food despite my putting it as far back on the counter as possible (most recently half a package of cookies).

When I get up at night to go to the bathroom, I come back to find her in my spot with her head on my pillow - and she won't move. Sometimes I have go sleep on the couch, cause I can't get into bed with all the dogs spread out over the bed.

And when she has done all this, she looks at me like, "Who, me? Would I do something like that, Mom?"

This is just what I can remember. There is more that does not immediately come to mind, probably as a self preservation mechanism.

I would like to nominate Buttercup for membership in the OEBE. IF she is going to do all this naughtiness, she may as well have a title with it.

Thanks.

Brenda and the Thundering Herd of Dog Woods Farm.

Sophie and Nancy checking in again.  I kinda like posting to the DD, hope our new families become members, or maybe they already are....and just don't know they are our new families yet :)

Nancy came with a pretty new collar and leash, and I had a pretty new leash, but my collar had seen better days.... and it didn't match my leash.  A senior gal can not go around without a matching collar and leash, it just isn't done.

All of Holly's stuff matches so she told her Momma to do something about my collar.  One of Holly's aunties had sent her a beautiful collar and leash, in fact it was the one she wore on her trip home from Daphneyland.  Auntie Suz grabbed her collar to see if that pattern would match my leash, and it did.  So she went shopping and found a collar in the same pattern for memememe.

Auntie Suz came back and took off my collar.  I didn't like that much, but she needed to get my rescue tag off.  Then I saw her put my tag on a brand new collar, lime green with purple and yellow butterflies on it.  I stood there wagging my tail.  I thought it was for me, then I knew cause she put it on me.  And it matches my pretty purple leash just perfectly.

When you are moving to LA you must have the right fashion accessories if you want to get anywhere :)

Snooters & Tail Wags,

Sophie - looking in the mirrow at my fine self
Nancy - could you bring the mirrow to my crate please??

Holly Noelle - next thing I know we'll all have matching hats & stuffies
