i do not mean to play down the pain glaucoma causes the owners of
bassets by any stretch of the imagination but i can't help wondering
if the dogs themselves care? It certainly is not the end of the world.
dogs live in the eternal present. they adapt to whatever comes their
way and move on. i haven't seen any three legged dogs mourning a
lost limb, for instance.
over time i have seen many blind dogs. some were blind from
birth, others from diseases like glaucoma. in each case the dog
seemed happy and well adjusted. i even saw one owner once who had
trained his dog with commands like step up, step down, and the
like... so the dog knew what was coming.
it all comes down to love and security. if the dog knows it still
has a place in the pack, then it's happy.
