Because they are "property".  Slaves were property and look how long it took
for many people to see them as more than that, and all the things that were
done out of disrespect to them ... now add in that "dogs" don't speak or
have higher order thoughts so they are "obviously inferior to humans" ...
its a maddening concept, something people are willing to die for, kill for,
and yet people still don't respect each other enough to allow for the
alternative views. ... ie. you don't have to believe this pet is like my
family, but you should respect that I have that feeling because I am human
like you, and thus you should not harm what I consider "my family".
 
Some day ... maybe some day, things will be better, maybe the respect will
become more common to all ... and not just in regards to domesticated pets.
