I know the white tip was bred deliberately to make the hounds easy to see in thick brush, although I don't know if it's required by the breed standard. Basil is a black and tan, and has no white tip on his tail.

I've been looking at Lilie and Daffodil's tails and marveling at the few inches of white at the tips.

With all the variations of color and pattern on Basset bodies, the tails still seem to always conform to white tips.

For those of you who know much more than I, is this always the case or is it common to have no white tip at times? These are the simple things that my mind comes up with when it's allowed out to wander by itself.
