After dealing with Jane as a pupster, I thought I was inoculated against puppies. She chewed up everything imaginable and a few things that I'd never have imagined she'd be interested in. The linoleum floor became history because of her chewing. An infinite number of TV remotes lost their lives to her teeth. The butler's table my brother made lost a few inches of wood to her jaws.

Jane is now eleven. At times I look at pictures of puppies and think, "How wonderful." But I can't believe my own brain--I immediately remind myself of the puppy depredations I've already experienced, and the thought begins to fade.

I'm sure, as another Drooler commented, God makes them so cute because otherwise we'd do damage to them. It's hard to resist that allure. I hope I can--I certainly will until the awful time when we lose some of the three seniors we currently have. No way I could bring a puppy into this household. A couple of young fosters caused our dogs to look at me and say, "Please, mom, not another one!" No BHP has entered this house since.

But I know that someday I may fall victim to BHPS--it's a perpetual danger to those who love bassets.
