Hi all,

Fizban here, the drool has been sad this week with all the hounds going to the bridge. Pw. Tasselhoff and I are slinging drool to all their families to help their hearts get better soon, we are also slinging drool for all the sick houndies that need it. To help cheer everyone up I want to tell you all about the slave training I've been doing. Slave training has been quite challenging for me because the bassets who came before me, Flint, who went to the bridge before I was born and Pw. Tasselhoff, have done a great job training my slave. So, there wasn't much I needed to do. There are a few gaps though, that I have addressed over the last year. I apologize for not repawting these things sooner, but I've been doing inpawtant hound things. You know sniffin' and snoozin and going on walks and stuff.

Anyhound, the two areas that have needed improving are the grandpaw slave and hound comfort outside during all weather conditions. Grandpaw slave has been quite the challenge, as tried and true techniques, such as the look, just flat basset don't work. I have found a modification that works well though. I give grandpaw the look while the momslave or grandma is watching; when the look fails on grandpaw I give the look to mom/grandma and sigh. Mom/grandma then proceeds to tell grandpaw to do whatever it is that I wanted. One area where grandpaw has been pawticularly stubborn is letting me and Pw. Tasselhoff come in his house.

This is not a huge problem in Salt Lake as the momslave tells grandpa and grandma they must come to our house (although I will be addressing this in the future and have made some progress). The real problem is the grandpawents second house in central Utah. In the past, the momslave didn’t visit there much because grandpaw wouldn’t let us in the house. The thing is, I really like going to that house, cuz it’s in the country and there’s a lot of great smells and we going fishing and for long walks and other great stuff. The year before last we visited on Thanksgiving. Tas and I insisted on staying in the house during the day and mom got us all a hotel room for at night. Well this was a start but really not a satisfactory arrangement. So on Thanksgiving evening when we were leaving for our hotel I whined and looked really sad. Grandpaw was holding the door open for mom and his eyes were getting kinda leaky. So I whined again and gave grandma the look. Grandpaw said “I don’t like sending them to the hotel” and grandma said “don’t look at me I don’t mind if Tas and Fiz sleep in the house.” Then mom said “It’s ok, c’mon boys” and we left!!! GRRRR I was not very happy with the momslave for messing up all my hard work.

Well, along comes summer and Grandpaw calls the momslave and tells her that he bought us a trailer, you know a house on wheels, for when we visit him in Loa. Then grandma got on the phone and said she put a little leather couch in it so we can be comfy on the furniture and that the hound bed was queen size so there was plenty of room for the momslave to sleep with us like she does at home. I have to admit when I first heard about the trailer I was a bit miffed as I was working towards sleeping in grandpaw’s house but the more I thought about it the better I liked this trailer idea.

So in August we all went and visited grandma and grandpaw and checked out our trailer. Wow! It was pawsome! It had all the stuff grandma said plus air conditioning and room for our dog beds and bowls and stuff. Plus mom liked it cuz it gave her a place to get away and have some privacy and stuff. It did need a few modifications however. It was hard for Tas and I to get up the steps so we had Grandpaw build ramps up to the doors. Plus it didn’t have a doggy door, can you imagine? How are we suppose to get outside when there is an interestin’ smell or nature calls? Needless to say we had grandpaw fix that problem too, so now we have a doggy door in our trailer. Grandpaw still needs a LOT of training but I thought this was a big step in the right direction. This repawt has gone a little long so I’ll tell about more of my slave training in another post.

Mary, Pw. Tasselhoff and Fizban
