I agree with your advice for these problems. My Basset has survived neck disc surgery for almost 3 yrs with good nutrition and even the surgeon and new vet called it something kin to a miracle. I also keep him off furniture per the surgeon's orders and his weight is the about what it was 3 yrs ago. He rises slowly from his bed if he has been sleeping awhile, but he seems comfortable and active enough for a 12 yr old Basset.
