Thanks, the hounds are crated when I'm gone. Ace is the only one out, and that is when he does most of his damage - not when I'm in the room. There is never anything harmful to him out, but he is ever hopeful of a score. He's chewed open cans to get to the food. (talk about food motivated...) He doesn't rip paper, just brushes is to the floor to see what is behind/under it. Same with the can opener and other things on the counter. They all get moved around in his search for a spare crumb. With all his fur, and the size of him (175 lbs), a small mouse trap doesn't do more than make noise. Stacking cans or penny cans don't work. I've dropped pans on Ace's head (accidently while navigating the sleeping bodies in the kitchen) and he doesn't even move.

I wouldn't recommend this for a small dog, or, say, on the couch for houndies for the reasons you mention. I wouldn't want to get an ear or lip. I suppose I could find a trap hanging off Ace's fur, but these spring pretty easily and just jump up so I think even that is unlikely.

He kept away all night so I upped the ante this morning - spray cheese ;-) Maya the Great Dane checked one out and is now staying out of the kitchen. Kahuna tripped one with his big ol' foot when he jumped up and is pacing, giving the counter dirty looks. Ace hasn't tried again, but I've been close by. I'll see when I take a shower in a bit. Then I need to run to the post office (I stole a set of my parents' keys when I visited for the holidays and need to mail them back) so I'll see what happens. This may actually work!
