Are you or have you adopted him because you you will find it hard to let him go.  I worked with Dazey she had Addisons, fighting re pills finding money, rush visits to vet  and the vet finally told me she was 10  'it is time to let her go'.  She had to tell me.
It's twice as tough losing them when you're working to keep them around.
Just a thought.
