Hi all,
Thought I'd post and tell you about Fizban's bday on Saturday. He turned 5, amazing how time flies! It seems like just yesterday I was posting about my basset puppy that was having seizures and wasn't expected to live. He had seizures for about 3 months and then they just went away and to my knowledge he hasn't had one since. He is a big boy, a healthy 70 lbs and he grew very quickly. He never went through that gangly teenager stage, at 6 months he had the build of a 3 year old basset. My current vet guesses that his body grew faster than his nervous system could keep up with and that caused the seizures.
I don't know if I have ever posted about it before but Fizban LOVES little critters. My neighbors have a sugar glider and a guinea pig that we watch when they go out of town. When they are at our house Fizban will spend hours just watching them, especially the sugar glider who is more active. Last summer they spent two weeks at our house and Fizban moped around for three days after they left. Until that visit I thought he paid so much attention to them because he wanted to eat them, but the sugar glider got out of her cage somehow (I think Fiz helped) and I came in the room and Fiz was just sitting there looking at her. He was only a foot away from her and his tail was wagging like crazy. What was funny was that Sug wasn't afraid of him at all she was just sitting there looking at him, not at all bothered. Then I tried to catch her and put her back in her cage, no sitting still then! Fiz and Sug have a little routine they do all the time. Fiz paws at her cage and Sug ignores him, then he paws at her cage again and she chatters at him, you can just here her cussing him out and telling him to let her sleep, then he paws at the cage again and she comes out and Fiz just watches her for as long as she stays out. When she goes back in her pouch it starts all over again.
Well fast forward to Saturday, my smooshy boy's bday. I took Pw. Tasselhoff and Fizban for a walk in the park and then we went to Petco to pick out a bday present. We were walking up and down the aisles, the boys sniffed at a few things but didn't show any real interest in anything. So I said to Fiz "it's your birthday so you get to pick out whatever you want for a present" All of sudden Fiz's tail started wagging and he beelined it down one of the aisles. Another customer that had heard me actually followed us because Fiz was so focused and definitely had something in mind. Much to my dismay I realized we were headed to the small animal cages. I wish I had a camera, Fiz went right up to the glass windows and jumped up and put his paws on the window and looked in, just like a little kid, at a the little critters. His tail was wagging a mile a minute and the lady that had followed us was telling everyone that he wanted a pet for his bday. Fizban spent 45 minutes looking at mice, hamsters, guinea pigs etc, with me telling him the whole time that he didn't get a critter for his bday and that I was thinking more along the lines of a squeeky or rawhide. I finally got him away from that section of the store but he refused to pick anything else out so I let Tas pick something for him (Tas couldn't care less about the critters). Fiz wasn't very happy with me. I guess the boys still need to work some on my slave training. I've almost caved a couple of times but I don't really have the time to care for a sugar glider and I have read that they need a lot of interaction. I take the boys with me when I do things after work but somehow I can't see myself bringing a sugar glider along. I did try to make it up to him. He got a raw elk steak for dinner and I took Monday off. We all went hiking for the day and the boys got to sniff to their hearts content.
I'm a couple of weeks behind on my drools but we're slinging drool to any that may need it.

Mary, Pw. Tasselhoff and Fizban
