My first Basset had a longer coat, they actually originated in France   in 
the 1800's and were popular over there, they were developed by the Count Le  
Couteuix De Canteleu. he wanted a short legged dog who could with stand the  
harsh terrain of Northwestern France.  My Lucy was beautiful with lots of  
mottling (speckling ) her top coat was rather course with a soft undercoat and  curly 
hair on her neck ( mane )  and curly fetlocks on her hind legs.   the man my 
son bought her from actually called us 7 months after we had her and  asked if 
he could buy her back from us,  we paid $475.00 for her and he  offered us 
$1,500  we refused his offer, she also had the heavy loose  skin, she looked 
like she weighed 70 lbs, but she actually only weighed  50 . she was beautiful, I 
have never seen another Basset like her either.  not with the marking or the 
feathered coat.
