My first Basset had a longer coat, they actually originated in France in
the 1800's and were popular over there, they were developed by the Count Le
Couteuix De Canteleu. he wanted a short legged dog who could with stand the
harsh terrain of Northwestern France. My Lucy was beautiful with lots of
mottling (speckling ) her top coat was rather course with a soft undercoat and curly
hair on her neck ( mane ) and curly fetlocks on her hind legs. the man my
son bought her from actually called us 7 months after we had her and asked if
he could buy her back from us, we paid $475.00 for her and he offered us
$1,500 we refused his offer, she also had the heavy loose skin, she looked
like she weighed 70 lbs, but she actually only weighed 50 . she was beautiful, I
have never seen another Basset like her either. not with the marking or the
feathered coat.
