[Dailydrool] The Journey

Kurtti, Gary Gary.Kurtti at stoneridge.com

I received this from our pet sitter and just wanted to share it.

When you bring a pet into your life, you begin a journey. A journey that
will bring you more love and devotion than you have ever known, yet will
also test your strength and courage. If you allow, the journey will
teach you many things, about life, about yourself, and most of all,
about love. You will come away changed forever, for one soul cannot
touch another without leaving its mark.

Along the way, you will learn much about savoring life's simple
pleasures -- jumping in leaves, snoozing in the sun, the joys of
puddles, and even the satisfaction of a good scratch behind the ears. If
you spend much time outside, you will be taught how to truly experience
every element, for no rock, leaf, or log will go unexamined, no rustling
bush will be overlooked, and even the very air will be inhaled,
pondered, and noted as being full of valuable information.

Your pace may be slower, except when heading home to the food dish, but
you will become a better naturalist, having been taught by an expert in
the field. Too many times we hike on automatic pilot, our goal being to
complete the trail rather than enjoy the journey. We miss the details:
the colorful mushrooms on the rotting log, the honeycomb in the old
maple snag, the hawk feather caught on a twig.

Once we walk as a dog does, we discover a whole new world. We stop; we
browse the landscape, we kick over leaves, peek in tree holes, look up,
down, all around. And we learn what any dog knows; that nature has
created a marvelously complex world that is full of surprises, that each
cycle of the seasons bring ever changing wonders, each day an essence
all its own.

Even from indoors you will find yourself more attuned to the world
around you. You will find yourself watching: summer insects collecting
on a screen; how bizarre they are; how many kinds there are or noting
the flick and flash of fireflies through the dark. You will stop to
observe the swirling dance of windblown leaves, or sniff the air after a
rain. It does not matter that there is no objective in this; the point
is in the doing, in not letting life's most important details slip by.

You will find yourself doing silly things that your pet-less friends
might not understand: spending thirty minutes in the grocery aisle
looking for the cat food brand your feline must have, buying dog
birthday treats, or driving around the block an extra time because your
pet enjoys the ride. You will roll in the snow, wrestle with chewier
toys, bounce little rubber balls till your eyes cross, and even run
around the house trailing your bathrobe tie with a cat in hot pursuit,
all in the name of love.

Your house will become muddier and hairier. You will wear less dark
clothing and buy more lint rollers. You may find dog biscuits in your
pocket or purse, and feel the need to explain that an old plastic
shopping bag adorns your living room rug because your cat loves the
crinkly sound. You will learn the true measure of love. The steadfast,
undying kind that says, "It doesn't matter where we are or what we do,
or how life treats us as long as we are together."

Respect this always. It is the most precious gift any living soul can
give another. You will not find it often among the human race. And you
will learn humility. The look in my dog's eyes often made me feel
ashamed. Such joy and love at my presence. She saw not some flawed human
who could be cross and stubborn, moody or rude, but only her wonderful
companion. Or maybe she saw those things and dismissed them as mere
human foibles, not worth considering, and so chose to love me anyway.

If you pay attention and learn well, when the journey is done, you will
be not just be a better person, but the person your pet always knew you
to be. The one they were proud to call beloved friend.

I must caution you that this journey is not without pain. Like all paths
of true love, the pain is part of loving. For as surely as the sun sets,
one day your dear animal companion will follow a trail you cannot yet go
down. And you will have to find the strength and love to let them go.

A pet's time on earth is far too short, especially for those that love
them. We borrow them, really, just for a while, and during these brief
years they are generous enough to give us all their love, every inch of
their spirit and heart, until one day there is nothing left. The cat
that only yesterday was a kitten is all too soon old and frail and
sleeping in the sun. The young pup of boundless energy now wakes up
stiff and lame, the muzzle gone to gray.

Deep down we somehow always knew that this journey would end. We knew
that if we gave our hearts they would be broken. But give them we must
for it is all they ask in return. When the time comes, and the road
curves ahead to a place we cannot see, we give one final gift and let
them run on ahead, young and whole once more. "God speed, good friend,"
we say, until our journey comes full circle and our paths cross again.

And bless their souls for sharing their lives with us... and adding so
much to our very existence.

I have enjoyed the thread on "how do you know if your dog is happy".
But I think we're asking the wrong question of ourselves, as the supreme
basset slaves that we all are. I can only speak for me, but it makes
sense to me that we should be asking "when AREN'T our little basset
babies happy!" Mine are so spoiled that they seem to always be happy to
me, unless of course they're having to give up whatever is in their
mouths (Sophie) or having to endure the frigid temps on cold winter
mornings (Diva...although frigid is a loose term, it's like 55 degrees
here!!) That's pretty much it...anything else they want, they just go
for it, so if they're STILL not happy, um...tough patooey! He he

OMG, I was laughing so hard.? We have the same issue with both Snoopy
and Vanessa.? Snoopy is?more of a?spinner but jumps on Vanessa's
too.??However,?Vanessa well she thinks Snoopy is her personal "soft
serve machine".?? I too have yelled at them that Snoopy isn't a "tootsie
roll machine", "soft serve machine", and who knows what else.? Vanessa
is right there tongue out ready to catch it.? It's so gross, you have to
make a joke of it.? Neighbors are probably like what in the heck is
going on over there.? They know they are not suppose to be doing it, if
they didn't they wouldn't come in all sad and pouty looking.??I would
understand if they didn't get enough to eat, but I know that isn't?the
issue.?

Hello everyone, I have a question and hope someone has dealt with this
or knows someone who has. Our female basset age 10 has been diagnosed
with synovial sarcoma in the forearm (elbow). The good part is that the
vet says this is not a cancer that will spread easily however for
survival and quality of life he recommends amputation of the entire
forearm. Have any members had experience with amputation of a hounds'
forearm? Our girl is older, however she is on the smaller size only
35lbs. I have attempted to researched the effects of amputation of a
forearm on a basset hound but have found no information. Only found
sites with information on mainly large breeds (long legged). We are
concerned that our girl will not be able to walk or get around since the
hounds are low slung and heavy chested. Anyone who has info is free to
email me privately at jal315 at msn.com.

All of my kids counter cruise anytime they see or smell something
that might be good. Sadie is my limousine drooler
and can actually reach into the sink. Yes I do believe she
has a slinky in her back. Even little Nelly Belle tries to cruise
but she is so short that her paws won't even reach the counter
top....doesn't stop her from trying. Even though I correct her
I have to admit that it is cute. I use to keep a step stool in the
kitchen, but when I caught Sadie using it to climb I knew it had to
go. None of mine counter cruise while I am right there, they
always wait until I am in another room.

None of mine ever feel guilty about their bark-bark-bark.
When I call them on it they just come running with wagging
tails and what I call their happy proud face.

Kelly - One suggestion.? Look for the Pod....LOLOL.? He's obviously
been "snatched" by aliens.

Nail trimming is so traumatic for him that he shrieks like he's lost a
limb when I trim the other dogs nails. Imagine my surprise when I put
the t-shirt on him this weekend, grabbed the clippers and trimmed all
his nails in less than 15 minutes. Not a whimper, not a shriek and no
fighting. He was the perfect gentleman. How did that happen?

We wanted to thank you for the Drool for our "foster" Cleo's dental
work.
It's beyond me how some people can call themselves dog owners
Apparently her previous owners neglected her dental health, resulting in
the vet having to extract 11 teeth from this poor little girl. She was
found as a stray and it would be my guess that her "people" just let her
go so they wouldn't have to bother with her health.
Thank God for the High Country Basset Rescue who saved her, pay the vet
bills and were kind enough to give me the honor of caring for her until
a forever home can be found for her.
Cleo is my first foster and she has made me realize what wonderful work
all the rescues do. God Bless you all.
Clean albeit, a lot fewer teeth woofs to all.
Janie Anne (OK, OK, I'll be nice to Cleo while she recovers), Bill
(you'd better) & Cleo (I wants to thank the rescues myself, especially
Jeromy)

Where did my sweet, adorable, non-destructive, trustworthy
9 1/2 month old baby girl, Sadie go? Did the OEBE aliens come down
do a switch? Is there an OEBE moon phase? Has one of the
OEBE members been privately sending her information on how
to be OEBE? Whatever has happened....I WANT MY GIRL BACK!

In the last 3 days she has managed to destroy (yes I know it was her...
she was caught in the act)

1. One extra land line phone that was on the kitchen counter.
I discovered this when I heard the other phone doing weird things
and looked to see "conference call". Hmmm... was she calling
other
      OEBE members for tips?
2. The back up cell phone that was in the desk drawer
3. One full ream of printer paper.
4. The satellite remote control.
5. My glasses which will be almost $400 to replace.
She stretched her slinky body from the bed to the tall dresser to
get them.
6. The grandbabies crayons in the other desk drawer.
No she didn't eat them...just chewed them up.
7. A 1/4 bag of EVO for the cats. Still haven't figured out how
she opened the closet door. Still waiting for the upset tummy.
8. Shredded one kitchen rug and it was her favorite one to lay on.

If she is turning OEBE and did all this in 3 days, Lord help me!
She is now laying on the couch beside me snoring away, without a
care in the world. All I have to say is it is a good thing I love the
little snot.

Droolz,

Sadie's take on the situation : Bwaaaahahahaha....wunnner

Has anyone else in Calif noticed extreme shedding this past week or two?
I
never thought my boys really "molt" since we have a pretty stable
climate
year round (we're in San Diego) but we had unprecedented amounts of rain
and
cold weather in December and now have had unusually warm weather the
past
few weeks. And I've noticed my boys are shedding like CRAZY!!!

Just wondering if maybe they're molting early due the drastic weather
changes....its supposed to rain tonight thru the rest of the week though
so
I guess our wonderfully warm weather is ending. :(

Drool to all,
Kacy with Cowboy & Rupert

Brenda, I'm so sorry to hear of Tinkerbelle's diagnosis. My neighbor's
golden died of mast cell cancer last year. They opted for surgery to
remove
the original tumor but, as I'm sure your vet told you, they often
re-grow in
the same spot. When Jake's did (and it was only a year later) he wasn't
a
candidate for surgery -- he was a year older (at 12), and they had
removed a
fair amount of muscle tissue in his leg with the first surgery. My
friends
decided they didn't want him crippled for what time he had left. They
were
able to greatly extend the quality and quantity of his life once he got
his
"terminal" diagnosis using prednisone, which can sometimes push mast
cell
cancer into remission. They were able to keep him quite comfortable for
quite a while using that. I know too when my Lisa was suffering from
arthritis a holistic vet I took her to was a huge proponent of
grain-free
diets. According to her, grain causes inflamation in dogs, so it would
stand to reason that if prednisone, an anti-inflammatory helps, that
eliminating other inflammatories from her diet would help as well.
Whatever
course you decide the bassets are slinging much drool for Tinkerbelle
and
you're in my thoughts. I hope whatever time you have left with her is
wonderful for you and for her, and I'm so very sorry.

Drool for Cleo that her dental and extractions went OK today, and
no-worry
drool is being slung for Bill. Laura (Geoffrey, Molly, Henry, Rosebud,
Lisa
