[Dailydrool] Sleepless nights

Hi everyone - I'm back with a problem with Barnaby now 4 years old. My partner and I need to be up for work in the morning and so need our sleep. Barnaby - my beautiful basset boy - likes to play at night and doesn't seem to want to let us sleep. After a 10 pm last wee in the yard - I put Barnaby downstairs for the night. The only problem is our other dog Vodka comes up to the bedroom with us and as he doesn't move an inch all night - he is permitted on the bed. All is quiet with Barnaby downstairs in the hall but around 2:30 in the morning starts to howl and howl - we wake of course - I let him out - and as I'm half asleep leave the door to upstairs ajar he leaps upstairs to the bedroom. He then proceeds to move from the bed to the carpet to another big cushion back to bed - down on the floor and so it continues until we don't sleep at all. We are at our wits end - this has been going on for months and we are exhausted- don't know what to do to teach Barnaby what night sleeping is all about. I have tried taking him with me during the day and walking him after office hours - we walk them in a forest before diner. Nothing seems to work. I think Barnaby is jealous of the other dog Vodka - but if I put them both downstairs for the night vodka will scratch the door down. Please somebody send me a suggestion as what to do. Thank you in advance. Jackie Mumperson to Barnaby.

> My Brianna is five today. I still remember the first time I saw her while I was walking home from work when the he-slave was stationed in Korea. I got home and told him, "I saw this hotdog dog beagle dog thing." Three days later in runs the hot dog beagle thing which turned out to a basset puppy named Bob. We babysat her for a week, I fell in love, then fell apart when she had to go back. A month later the commander of the base put a restriction on what ranks could have pets. Bob needed a new home because her owner wasn't permitted to have a dog in the barracks anymore. So she came to us and we renamed her Brianna. She has been with us ever since, with us through 12 of our 15 moves in the past 6 years, through countless long-term stays in hotels, flights around the world, 3 cross-country drives, and having to stay with the grandparents to ride out the in-home quarantine before her journey to HI. Although our family has grown since Brianna came to live with us (we went
> from 1 cat and her to 4 cats and 2 more bassets), she will always be our first dog. We love her more than words and I can only hope that when it comes time to leave HI that she'll still be around. Here's to many more years with my grumpy houndie.

> Babbs is out of surgery. She will be home today. Things went well, but the vet said she has pus in the nose and they aren't sure what it is so they have done a culture and will put her on antibiotics. It takes about 5 days for the culture to come back. She had really bad ear infection so maybe it drained into the nose. Please send drool that she will be ok. Has anyone experienced this in their dog?

> I just rejoined the list a couple of months ago, although I was a Drooler for a number of years until AOL started bouncing my Drools and I had to leave the list. I am now on Cox so I am back but mostly lurking.. I don't know if anyone is left who remembers when I adopted a 7 month old rescue named Shorty in 1997 (I found out about Basset Rescue via the Drool and that is how I got Shorty.)
> Anyway, Shorty had been failing recently and Sunday he could not move his legs at all. He has been incontinent and was in pain when I tried to help him move. We sent him to the bridge this afternoon. The vet came to my house, and my brother came over for moral support. Shorty died very peacefully and I know he is now at the Bridge with Brandy, my first houndie.
> I have been crying for two days but I was calm during the procedure and right now I am just wiped out. Shorty was with me for 12 years, 3 months and 21 days and he was my Baby Boy. He was a wuss in every sense of the word - but would bark, growl and carry on like a lion to scare people. he always reminder me of the Cowardly Lion. He loved tummy rubs and hound hikes as well as an occasional piece of steak to celebrate birthdays and gotcha days. He did not care for cats, although I was told by the person who gave them up that he loved them. My cat Stinkie was often chased into the basement by Shorty and I really think Shorty liked cats the same way Alf did.
> He was a very big boy - 85 pounds of beautiful red and white houndie in his youth, although he has lost weight as he aged. I was very sick a few years ago with cellulitis and he and Brandy stayed right by my side during my recovery. When Dad died I cuddled up with Shorty and the hound I rescued in 2003, Rollie.
> Shorty is survived by Rollie and one cat, Cleo, as well as his Mom who loved him to pieces and will always carry wonderful memories of a beautiful Baby Boy.

> George is 6 months old. He started limping 3 weeks ago left fore leg. The vet has xrayed and has said this is due to an elbow incongruity, which may also effect his right foreleg. He wants us to meet with a specialist who can operate on Monday. I am feeling hurried into making a quick decision. My husband spoke with them today and asked them how much this would cost, at no time did they volunteer the information- price ?2,000(approx $3,200) per leg. George is insured but only to a max of ?2,500 per year. (If we were convinced this was necessary we would pay- btw)
>
> Spoke to George's breeder today, she has been breeding Bassets since 1965. She is very upset and has pleaded with us not to let the vet operate. She says it is probably pano and any operations would have to be repeated and be very costly. She has asked us to take George for a visit so she can see his limp and give advice.
>
> George has been on pain killers since Friday and seems much better. In fact today I didn't give him his second dose and he was still lively and active.

> Basset ears are very short when they are first born and they are also very thick. As they get older the ears grow and they get thinner they do not get really long for a while but when they get to walking good they just have to trip over their ears that makes them so fun to watch, I hope they are baby Bassets but none the less they are going to be cute! All puppies are!! God makes puppies cute so when they eat your couch you just have to smile!

> Thanks for all of the replies on the puppy ears and the cute newborn pics! I had no idea the ears were so small when they were born. I am going to try to put through some links to photos on our yahoo group, but I don't know if they will work. The puppies are being fostered in a home a couple of hours away, so I haven't had the chance to see them in person yet. Hopefully they will come to our summer picnic next month. I'd love to see them (I think there are 7!).

> We are droopy here for some reason. Just not feeling quite right or something. Ninja got up extra early at 4:30 this morning and did something she has never done. She refused to eat breakfast. Maggie, who usually won't eat breakfast ate hers and Ninja's. Miss Ninj is still kind of off. Shelby got up extra early too and came in to wake me up. She never does that. She usually makes it to the back door with breakneck speed because she has to pee. She tanks up like a camel when she drinks so when she has to go, she really has to go.

> Last night we took all the girls to the dogpark. Even grumpy Miss NInj. She still does not work and play well with others. She tried to take the nose off of a Husky from outside the fence. Hence, she didn't get to go in and play. The other three went in and sort of played. Shelby just found someone to pet her and sat the whole time. Marley and Maggie played a llittle and mostly drank everyone else's water. Maggie wants to play with the big dogs but she always acts a little bewildered.
