[Dailydrool] Transporting Hounds

I have to agree with Dawn (of the east) and in most cases believe that people should adopt from their local rescue. But in this day and age that doesn't mean that the Hound may not end up many miles away from the rescue it was adopted from.

More and more families are moving due to the economy. I moved almost 2,000 miles a couple of years ago and Gina Marie came with me. She had been adopted from Tri-State when I lived in NJ. I have no doubt that Tri-State would have figured out how to get her back if something had happened to me, but that was something that wasn't even considered when I adopted her.

And my belief is that if you are adopting from a rescue out of state that you should be willing to drive there to meet the Hound. That is why I drove 1400 miles to Daphneyland. I wanted Dawn (of the west) to see how Holly interacted with me, so she could be comfortable will allowing me to adopt her. I'm not even sure that I would have considered having her brought to me, even if that had been offered. Not every Hound can or will bond with every person, it has to be that special connection that is made when they first meet. And for a rescue to have to pay to send, and/or retrieve a Hound from a placement that didn't work out is a waste of time and money that could be put to better use.

I do understand that when there is a "special needs" Hound that sometimes they may have to be transported to someone that is willing to adopt them, but that can't make the long trip. There are exceptions to every rule. And finding a good home for a special needs Hound is one of them. But I'm sure (hoping) that the rescue does have a plan to bring that Hound back home if it doesn't work out.

That post that started this discussion was about a transport of 2 senior Hounds from 1 rescue to another. It looks like these 2 girls will be heading west to Daphneyland next month. I would like to thank everyone that has emailed me about these 2 girls, each and every one of those emails were forwarded to Dawn at Daphneyland.

That post was never about me, except that I felt responsible for them being removed from the transport. It was all about getting these 2 girls to someplace safe, where they will probably find a family that is willing to adopt them.
And with the help of some Droolers that is exactly what's going to happen :)
