Boomer has “wobbler’s syndrome,” or cervical spondylomyelopathy. For those
who are unfamiliar with the condition, his cervical column is unstable, so
some of the vertebrae in his neck are messed up…specifically C3-4 and C4-5.
His spinal cord is compressed almost flat in those areas, so that’s what’s
causing him to walk erratically. He was probably born with it, and it’s just
gotten progressively worse. Treatment involves surgery to fix or surgery to
stabilize. There’s too much risk involved with the surgery, so I'm leaning
towards stabilization. We could also leave it be and just let him live out
the rest of his life, but I think he’s in some pain, so stabilization will
alleviate some of that. I hope.

I've decided to bring him home for a bit and consider all of my options. The
doctor prescribed tramadol for pain and prednisone for inflammation. I'm not
expecting a miracle, but I just want to do what's best for him, and I need
time to figure out what that is.

Thanks to all of you for your kind emails.
