Basset Hounds can make wonderful therapy dogs. Many Bassets do very well
in obedience competition, and most have no trouble passing their Canine
Good Citizen Test. Any dog that has an obedience title must be able to work
off lead, so that should not be a problem. Get your dog trained in
Obedience, get his or her CGC Text passed, and then work toward Therapy.

My very first Basset Hound, who was a pet, not a show dog, was a therapy
dog, and worked wonderfully with children with special needs--blind, mentally
challenged, emotionally disturbed, etc. We also did a little work in
nursing homes.
