When I ordered my DD calendar last year and sorted through the countless
pictures of Lafayette trying to pick which one to choose for today's
calendar pic, never in a million years would I have known it would be her
last with us. We loved sharing our aviation themed stories and how she had
her own airplane, so it was only fitting to include mention of her
"pre-flight snacks" in this one.

She loved those knotted rawhide knotted chewies and it was so fun to watch
her jowls while she placed it on it's end between her big paws and chew
away, rotating her head from one side to the other. She was the best girl
hound and her flight crew is so happy to have been owned by her. When she
left us on Feb 21st just a month short of her 7th birthday due to
post-spleenectomy complications, we were devastated and besides ourselves
and oh so empty...and at a loss how to tell the many furends we had made
because of her, that she was gone. It was the hardest thing we've ever been
through as a family, but our drool family cried with us and got us through
it.

On April 11th, we had another bundle of basset joy enter our flight
crew...with the addition of Rocky Road, a 7 month old basset boy, adopted
from Cindy of Iowa Basset Rescue. About a month prior to that our good drool
friend Anitra Palato had been sending out emails that she was adding a
basset girl to her family as Santana was in need of a basset sister. It took
us a while to open up her email to get a glimpse of her wonderful news,
having been so fresh off the loss of our own girl. When we did look at her
pics...we were so glad we did as in her pics, her buppie girl had a
brother...who we decided to adopt! It was such sweet and sorrow mixed
together, knowing we were moving on. We didn't think it would happen so
soon...ironically enough, we picked him up on my birthday. A present from my
bridge angel girl?

And LOL...while I don't think he will be a member of the royal court anytime
soon (unless creating your own indoor water parks qualifies...) his markings
on one side are almost identical to hers, but then you look to his other
side and he's a completely different dog. I think Lafayette sent him to
me...to keep me busy so that I don't have time to shed so many tears about
her not being here :)

And as Rocky Road discovers the many knotted rawhide bones that she had
buried around the yard and brings them to me...we are reminded of her and
how because of her we became to be Droolers and how she helped introduce us
to our first basset hound friends, Tom & Kathy Jones who lived nearby (she
shared many calendar pages with her pwince Gus of Boulder!)

Blue skies to our girl...we miss you...you now have a more important job of
being the Bridge-jet pwincess, ensuring safe flights to all those who go
after you...

Brigette, your forever pawsonal flight attendant
Chris, your pilotdadslave
Anthony & Nicholas, your inflight entertainers
Pierre, your ground crew kitty

and Rocky Road...your airdrop package to us :)
