I am so proud right now!? Annie rolled around in the grass today for the first time!? Let me explain...pretty much from day one, Fred has enjoyed rolling around in the grass.? Usually he is rolling around on something that he has found? (a dead worm, bird poop, etc.)? He sniffs first, then twists his neck so that the top of his head is on it.? Then he flings himself onto his back and wiggles around with his legs in the air...Heaven, as far as he's concerned!? Annie has always been much more cautious, fearful and reserved than Fred.? For months when they first came to live with me, she wouldn't even get off the couch if I was in the room.? She still doesn't like me to be behind her when she's eating, and is just more aware of what's going on around her than Fred is...she always seems to be on the lookout for danger.? Considering that they came from a puppymill, it's not hard to imagine why she's like this, although I prefer not to...

Anyway, for the past few months, she would periodically find something really smelly and rub the top of her head on it.? I sometimes wondered if she wasn't able to get onto her back the way Fred does (she's not quite as "athletic" as he is), but I suspected that it was more because she could let go and let her guard down enough to do so.? I always told my mom that if she ever did do it, I'd probably lose it!? Well, today we went for a walk.? Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her head go down and, next thing I know, her short little legs are up in the air!!? I didn't want her to know I was watching, but eventually I couldn't help myself.? I started saying, "Yay Annie!"? She rolled back over and I pet her on the head.? A few minutes later, Fred was rolling around, and I felt obligated to make a big deal about him too...don't want him to get jealous :)

It is really amazing how far dogs can come once they learn that it's ok to trust and to just be dogs.? Now, if she could just figure out what toys are for, I'd feel that I've done my job!!

Rose, Annie (wow, the grass feels nice on my back) and Fred (I've been doing that for years?? What's the big deal??)
