It warms my heart that you both took Grandma Sara into your home, and also allowed the dogs to acknowledge her passing and participate in the event. I believe that it gives closure to the dog, and helps allow them to mourn in their own doggy way. If her spirit was lingering, I am sure that she smiled at the love you showed her and the dogs.

When Bubby passed, I took each dog in turn to sniff his remains. Some of them acknowledged him, some ignored him as uninteresting, but they all settled into a different routine pretty quickly. About two weeks later Clover, his lifelong companion, went out looking in all of Bubby's favorite haunts, then sang a solo for about two minutes, that none of the other dogs joined in on. It seemed to be a respectful silence as they all observed but didn't participate. Yes, dogs mourn, and yes, they do understand the death of a loved one. Bless you for your kindness to both Grandma Sara and to the dogs that she loved. I pray that her last days were filled with a special grace and love that brought her and you joy and peace with her passing. May she rest in the arms of God.
