In my opinion, any rules to be enforced with an adult should be enforced
with the puppy from day one.  It can be confusing when something is
ok one day and verboten the next.  I would also start the crate right
away.  My dogs like the security of a crate.  We put one in the
puppy pen with them as soon as they move out of the whelping box and
there's usually someone sleeping in it.  However, be sure the crate
is not too big for the baby puppy.  An adult sized crate will not
discourage a puppy from pottying.  If your crate didn't come witih a
movable divider just fill up the extra space with bricks or cement blocks
and remove a few at a time as he grows.  the crate should be just
large enough for him to lay downd and stretch out, and stand up and turn
around.

A collar and leash are a must.  Start by attaching
the leash to the collar and letting the puppy drag it around.  Once
he is used to the feel of the leash, you can pick up the other end and
follow him.  Then start to encourage him to follow you.

As
to toys, I recommend several good chew toys.  Nylabones are good if
the puppy likes them.  Mine usually don't.  Hard rubber toys
like kongs are safe to chew but may be a bit too much for baby
teeth.  Rawhide should only be given under supervision and make sure
it isn't imported form China or some third world country.  My puppies
enjoy chewing on whole carrots.  Puppies also enjoy soft stuffies,
something with no eyes or noses that can be pulled off and
swallowed.  I buy many of my puppy toys at garage sales - you can
often buy stuffed animals for 10 or 25 cents.  Mine also really like
to have one BIG stuffed animal to sleep ON.  The best seems to be
this silly duck with a large bill and a tuft of fluff on top of his
head.

Remember not to let the baby puppy get away with any
behavior you don't plan to tolerate from him as an adult.

And
snuggle with him a few times for me.  Purple's baby is still a little
too small for really satisfying snuggles.  Although Purple finds
snuggling with her to be very satisfying.  For a wild woman, Purple
has been one of the best moms we have ever had.
