I never looked until today, but the Vet in San Antonio only charged $34.85 for the euthanasia and $135. for the individual cremation.  That also included having Gina's ashes returned in a beautiful ceramic urn.

The cost of the cremation is probably lower than some b/c they do it on the premises, and Gina's ashes were returned to me within 48 hours.

I stopped at the desk on my out that day to pay my bill and they told me that I could take care of it later.  This is a Vet that I had only been using for about a year, not someone that I had a long history with.  I don't remember much from that day other than the Vet put his arm around me and walked me to my car.

A few days later I received a lovely card from the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation informing me that Gina's Vet had made a donation in her honor.

There is no doubt that I will be using them for Holly Noelle when she arrives at her new home in Texas.

Hey everyone!

Cassie the Bassie and Rylee Hound are preparing to Waddle at ABC's "There's No Place Like Home" waddle 2009 the first weekend of June! The waddle is tied in with the huge Oz-Stravaganza in Chittenango New York which is a big festival celebrating the Wizard of Oz movie and the Author who was born in Chittenango (Near Syracuse NY).

ABC sets up tents, has games and contests, The Slobber Shoppe! and of course a nice waddle in the Oz parade! We want to help ABC raise money for this event and to help out more hounds! If you can help us go to...

http://www.firstgiving.com/cassie-n-rylee

If you are in the area and want more information on attending (or if you are out of the area and want more info), go to www.nybasset.org for more details!

Thanks for you help!

Michelle Brenholtz...MomSlave 1 to Cassie the Bassie and Rylee Hound!

Only 2 of my  bassets have had to be euthanized (the others died in the vet's office, though) and my vets charged me only a small fee.  When I brought Solomon in this past October--the rescue in such distress from something--they didn't charge me at all.  I love my vets :)

I am thinking of getting a basset vanity tag, too!  I live in PA and I
think we get 7 letters...for 6 I came up with:  AHROOO, AROOOO, DROOLY,
IDROOL (hmmm...on second thought...:), EARS2U, and HOWLRS, WEHOWL...I
know that TriState Basset Rescue has the plastic license plate surrounds
because I have 2 of them.  I'm sure other rescues have them as well.

"Well, I must consider myself an expert by now as I have had two  Basset
with sever alleriges. after having my first Basset"

Alas, I'm no expert :-0 but can offer my own experiences .

"desensitizing shots only to have her get much worse ! which by the way is
NORMAL,,  you have to realize that you are"

To a point ... but everything is relative. "much" worse? How "much" worse is
acceptable / expected / bearable for the dog?

"after several months of trial and error, we finally realized  that we were
starting her injections during the ( peak allergy )  season  and that we
were over loading her immune system,  the key issue here is to  start  the
injections in the LATE FALL and EARLY WINTER.  it  takes time and patients .
but DONT give up."

Good point, and one the vet should have made. But even starting the shots in
late Fall and continuing all Winter as we did with Bonnie is no guarantee of
success.

"the shots work !!!!!"

Not always. There is actually a fairly large percentage of dogs who do not
benefit from allergy shots. Not surprisingly, most vets don't want to talk
about this (or don't know about it). I forget the actual figure, but it's in
the region of 40+ percent. In other words, allergy shots will do no good to
more than four out of every ten dogs.

Dear Cookie, Annie Belle Wild Child and Jennie Mae - I am so sorry for your
loss of the pawtist arteest, Pw. Pawcasso Bollom.  It is your loss most of
all, and an overwhelming one, at this time.  But it is the loss of all
members of the Drool as well.  Let us share your pain and lift you up with
precious memories of our beloved Pwincess.  We have so many memories of her
dedication and work for other houndies less fortunate then herself.  We have
treasured artwork in our homes, and smiles on our faces when we think of her
beautiful pictures, both the ones she made, and the ones in which she was
featured.  She was one of the most photogenic hounds ever captured on film.
We loved her, not as much as you, dear Cookie, but we loved her just the
same.  And we share in your missing her, and the glory of her legacy.
-with love, cathyb, with soft sweet slurples from Lucy Lou the WWB, OEBE and
snooter kisses from Puttin' on da Fritz

To make this Basset related, I've owned Bassets since the 50's and
publish a Basset magazine called the Bugler. But Jamie is (was) a big
(big!) yellow Lab mix with a history of swallowing bad things -- and
ended up being a house-dog after surgery two years ago to remove an
8-inch hunk of tree bark lodged in intestine. She got sick last Tuesday
and the signs were the same -- vomiting, not eating. We took her to same
vet the next day and he x-rayed and said didn't see anything (he didn't
see anything the other time, either). Gave us anti-nausea pills and sent
her home. She seemed a tad better on Thursday -- ate a few spoonfuls of
cottage cheese -- but nothing on Friday. Saturday she was noticeably
sicker and much more so on Sunday. No vet available. We were up with her
all night -- kept telling her, "Just a few more hours, and we'll be at
vet's" but at 5 in the morning she died. She was only 5 and the
sweetest, kindest, most POLITE dog you could ever imagine. I remember
the first day she was in the house after coming home from hospital...
she started to squat on living room rug and I shouted, "No! Jamie!
Outside!" and held the door for her. Out she went and NEVER, ever had an
"accident" in the house. Before we installed a doggy door, she would
come to my office door and look at me for a few seconds. If I didn't
jump up, she'd whine softly (as in, "excuse me, but I really need to go
out, please").

I am so angry and bitter at the vet AND myself. The vet for not
recognizing the same scenario (and giving us no option of help over
weekend) and myself for not INSISTING what I knew needed to be done.
(Wish I were more like the kind of people I don't like -- brash and loud
and uncaring of feelings. Hoped with age I'd become less "nice" but
haven't improved enough in that regard. My mother was that kind, and I
always cringed when she went on a tirade -- and ended up being Ms.
Milquetoast...and letting a sweet dog suffer and die.)

So the point of all this, other than just venting to relieve some
pressure, is that no matter how much TECHNICAL stuff your vet knows,
it's very possible that YOU know more than he or she ever can about YOUR
dog. I'm not suggesting you haggle over every little thing, but if your
vet is dismissive of your feelings or intuition, stand your ground.
Don't give in, as I did, thinking they know best. They don't always.

Riche

Hi there,
I am in Utah and I have "Basset" on my ski utah plates and have had them about 16 years. When you go to DMV have a couple of ideas with you as the one you want might be taken. I love my plates and as added decoration I have put Basset Decals and paw prints all ove the hatch to my van. I have had many people talk to me about Bassets. I am getting over some health problems and can't wait to get on the show circuit again and show these guys!!
      Have a great day everyone!!

The Dog House gals put on their thinking?bonnets for a license plate.?
They hope that you can use symbols like in California. They?came
up with?heart (the symbol) BSSET, BSSET? heart symbol, Heart
symbol DROOL.? They are tired now so that is all they could come
up with and are now demanding a treat and nap for their hard work.

When we sent our Tucker to the Bridge it was $290.00 but we had a
private cremation. He came home in a simple but very nice cedar chest
urn with a lock?on it that I?am going to attach?his tags to.? My vet
would have waited to be paid but as we came in I handed the girls the
kidz card.? For me I didn't want to have to go back for a while and I am
still dreading our first physicals in a couple of months.? My daughter
was sweet enough to pick up Tucker's ashes and bring them home.

We are sending drool to all in need,
Karen and The Dog House Gang

Has anyone heard of the med called Comfortis.  Our vet wants us to give it to our bassets as one of them has fleas despite being treated with Frontline.

Oh, Cookie,

I was so very sad to read about Pw. Pawcasso Blossom leaving you.? My heart is heavy knowing how devastated you must feel.? But please know that you gave that shy little gurl the best of everything, and that your love kept her with you for so much longer than anyone could have predicted.?? She is no longer sick or shy, and she has oodles of new furends to keep her busy until the long-off day when you are reunited.? You and the pwincess have done so much to help the homeless houndies, and people will remember your little girl for years and years to come when they hang their stockings and ornymints.

Godspeed, Blossom, and say hi to Jacques for me!

OK, I am doing 2 more tests after kind help from droolers.?? Now, where are those question marks....????
To make this basset related, Morse was delighted to find a dead bird this afternoon, and rolled on him happily.?? His friend Homer did even better.??? He found a dead rabbit (is anyone eating? Please don't read any further if you are) - and refused to give it up.?? His owner (my friend) was horrified to see maggots running all over it, but Homer refused to spit it out, even though she had his jaws prized open.?? I bit the bullet, and shoved my hand to the back of his throat and got it out, it was utterly revolting.??? Homer sulked for the rest of the walk.?? Morse was incredibly impressed and had to be stopped on the way home from doing a detour to find maggot-infested bunny.??

Please bear with me!......
Morse's new pet hate is me cleaning out the pond.  I start to pull leaves out with the net and he stands behind me, simmering with irritation.  Then he aroooooooooos suddenly, loudly, which invariably makes me jump and almost fall headlong into the pond.  He then bites the end of the stick, and we do tug of war.  He also has a thing about water.  If I am watering the garden and spill any of the water near him he charges round like a maniac!  Another favourite game (does your basset do this?) is pulling the laundry out of the basket, or running down the garden with pegs in his mouth.  Today he took my slippers out of the basket and they had only just been washed - one of them is still out in the middle of the garden, muddied and slobbered on.  Now, as I have mentioned, Morse likes bunnies.  Dead ones, however, are the only ones he notices - usually the decaying smell grabs his interest.  To prove this point, he was in the field a few weeks ago
 and a
bunny came out of the hedge, saw Morse and jumped straight over him.  He didn't notice a thing.

When walking Dazey years ago we met this woman who looked at her and said 'you had better take that dog to a vet - her eyes are all red and droopy'.
I didn't say anything just agreed.
arooooooooooooooooooo!

Not only have I been remiss about posting as of late, but I realized that so
many of you are so good about noting your dogster pages and calendar dates
and I never add that stuff. I've addded a signature line to my email
including that but it may become annoying to delete everytime I email
someone not familiar with the drool. So we'll see if I keep it.

For now though, if you feel like making new friends on dogster, please check
us out. And also if you have a DD calendar, our date is August 7th.

Lub and drool to all,
