I need some help here.  Last Monday I adopted two Bassets from a shelter who were both breeder dogs.  They were housed together at the shelter. One 5 yr. old female and a male of 7 yrs.  They both seemed very loving and sweet and very attached to each other but after having them for just a week, she seems to be aggressive with other people when they come to the house.  They have their own room in the back witha doggie door and have been doing well with my 4 other dogs but tonight my grandsons came age 6, 9 and 12 and they have been raised with Bassets since they were born so they know how to handle dogs, well the 5 yr old female acted strange.  I put her and the male in their room and put their gate across so they would be safe and the kids would be safe.  The bathroom is right next to the room where the dogs are.  My Grandson went to the bathroom and she started to make a growling noise and barking at him with her tail wagging.  I assured her it was ok.   When my Grandson came out of the bathroom she jumped up on the gate barking at him.  Then my daughter came into the hallway and she literally barked and lunged at her for no reason.  She hit the fence full bore.  Thank God the fence was there.  Scared my daughter as well as me.  I don't know what to do about this.  The male is a sweetheart.  My Grandchildren were playing with him and he is great.  I can't deal this aggressiveness and I don't want to have to crate her anytime someone is here.  Something is wrong.  I believe she has gotten possessive of the male and protects him.  Otherwise I am not sure why she did this.  Can anyone tell me what I might do?  I can return her.  I don't know how well she will fair if she is seperated from him.  I know he will be fine.  There was another Basset in the kennel with her who was very shy.  I actually was going to get her instead but because of her behavior at the kennel,  I took the other ones instead.  I know you droolers can give me some suggestions.  We have had at least 10 Bassets in past years and only one was nasty.  She was 14 and only spent 10 months with us.
