Hi all - This was posted on the TSBHR Yahoo group today.

Every once and a while I am reminded
why we do what
we do to help the hounds that cannot help themselves.  We received this
email earlier today and will be getting Drew the Basset on Thursday.  I
am
going to post the email and at the end of it tell you the full story and
 how we
need your help.

Hello,
I am writing you in desperate need of
assistance.
We have recently found an abandoned Basset Hound named Drew.

We are currently house hunting.  At one of
the
houses that we viewed last week there was bark coming from the back
yard.
Knowing that this house was not occupied we became very curious about
where
exactly this barking was coming from.  I went around back to see who was

there.  We were both startled as I came around the corner and we saw
each other.  We actually scared the heck out of each other.  My heart
sank when I realized what I saw.  I went back to the front of the house
to
tell Bridgitt (my partner) and our realtor what I had discovered.  My
initial reaction was to contact animal services immediately.  Bridgitt
went
around back with our large jug of water and cautiously introduced
herself to the
scared little guy back there.  He was left there, chained up with no
shelter, water or food.  He was mangy, hungry, lonely, and as I've
already
stated scared.  However, even with the situation that he was in, he
graciously accepted some water and was happy to introduce himself to
Bridgitt.  We went home and returned as soon as possible with lots of
food
and water as well as a leash.  After he scarfed down the food we gave
him
he worked his way through about half a bag of treats while we contacted
the only
non-kill shelter in our area.  They allowed us to bring him in so we
could  give him a bath, they clipped his nails and gave him a few
vaccines.  Unfortunately they had taken in 16 dogs that same day and are

not able to take him.
This is where you will hopefully come in.  We
 are
just a young couple trying to buy our first home.  We currently rent a
small house with four animals of our own and our landlord does not want
us to
have another dog here for any amount of time.  We are desperate.  We
can not afford to take him to the vet or potentially rehab him for
several
months.  I will drive him anywhere if it means that there is an
organization out there that can help him. We can afford to leave a
modest donation with whomever is able to take him.  All I want to do is
give him a fighting chance to live the rest of his life happy and
healthy.
I really do not want to take him to a shelter here where he would be
destroyed
on the same day.  He doesn't deserve that.

Drew is a really good boy.  He's very loving
and
appreciative of being in a home and receiving care.  Please, please help
 us
help Drew.

Thank you,

Steven and Bridgitt

The rest of the story....... ......... ..
First of all Steven is someone that has gone beyond what most
people would
ever do.  He took it upon himself to remove Drew from his
situation with no authority and no support.  He contacted the only no
kill shelter in his area and they could not help.  He contacted Basset
rescue groups in
his state and beyond and they could not help.  His next to
last plea was to us.  His final option was to take the dog over 1000
miles
to his original home town in NH to a no kill shelter and claim he had
found him
locally just to make sure this dog was not killed.  He has four rescued
dogs in his home already and as you have read cannot have any more.
I am meeting Steven and Drew on Thursday  as that is
 half
way on the now 600 mile journey.
While Drew is far out of our normal area of operations this is a
truly
special situation that we are going to step into.
Drew has not been altered and is also heartworm positive.  He will
be
treated for heartworm here but needs a foster home that can limit his
activity
for at least 30 days.  This basically means keeping him crated for a
month.  There is no risk to your own animals IF they are on heartworm
preventative as heartworm requires a flea to bite an infected dog, suck
up the blood and worms and then bite a dog that is not on preventive.

To sum it all up we need help to foster Drew.
We also really need donations to help too provide Drew with the
heartworm treatment
(it is expensive).  Drew needs your Prayers and Drool
to get him through this.
If anyone would like to send a donation to help save Drew please go to tristatebassets.com and click on Donations located at the top of your screen, or you can email me at slave2thepaw at yahoo.com and I will send you the donation info.

Thank you,
Ellie and Her Very Spoiled  Rescued Hounds Artie, Ballzie, Milly and GM Thelma Lu
