You could also try nail polish remover on the nails, and butter on the
fur.  Butter certainly works on skin.  But then you wouldn't want them
to eat the butter/tar mixture ... so a bath might be needed afterwards.

As for the husband, I would think that assisting in the cleaning is
nearly enough punishment!  And having to think of a better way of fixing
the drive!
