It is good that you notified the FDA about the reaction you had with the dog food. In the human world when you report an experience with a drug to the FDA they do the same thing, the take a report and get the product back for testing. Alot of times the FDA is not involved because the consumer calls the company directly and the company takes the report and remedies the situation with refund or replacement of product, then at years end they are required to report all adverse events to the FDA but if you report directly to the FDA they do their own investigation of the product by getting it back. 

So the FDA contacting you and requesting the dog food is the proper procedure. They will track how many complaints they are getting on this and investigate. 

Hope this eases some anxiety. Reporting to the company gets it reported eventually but if you don't feel you are being taken seriously then by all means contact the FDA  of course the companies prefer to get their own reports but action maybe taken quicker with the FDA. I actually work filing these type of complaints for a pharmaceutical company and can assure you it is standard procedure with the FDA.
