What DE does is to puncture the shells of insects and they dehydrate or it allows insecticides in. DE is made of very small diatoms that lived in an ocean. The diatom's shells have many sharp pointed spines on them if seen under a microscope, this is what punctures the insects. It is one of the most effective means of roach control because they sense poison and stay away from it. DE is not toxic so the roaches spread it throughout their areas and ingest it while cleaning themselves. They then die from dehydration.
It is also a great filtration media and is widely used for filtration both industrial uses and water purification.
