thanks for the responses.....i have been doing most of the stuff 
suggested, crate is covered, using a leash, giving treats......go figure 
this am after i wrote my request he was more active with the other dogs, 
and did follow them out to the yard thru the doggy door with minimal 
prodding.....and did pee and poop.......i praised and rewarded him when 
he came in, he also went out for a few minutes unprodded just to smell 
around, and then came back in.....when they went out again later, he 
came down, but saw what was going on and ran back upstairs into 
einstein's crate......einstein is great and has not been protective of 
his stuff and shares well......i guess i am doing everything right and 
have to realize that i can't fix 4 years of mistreatment in a few 
weeks......unlike a puppy, he has other issues that have to be overcome 
before he can accept training.....so i will work with him....thanks all,
