[Dailydrool] Trimming Nails Myrtle Style

Mary Myrtle used to be AWFUL about having her toenails trimmed. She would get so grumpy that she would need to be muzzled. One time I took her to the vet and had her anesthetized and had an extreme pedicure done. What with all the geriatric blood tests and all, one pedicure cost well over a hundred dollars! I told Myrtle that this could not continue.

What I did was a slow desensitization process. Played with her feet and toes on a regular basis. Occasionally I would slide up to her as she slept on the bed or couch and clip off one nail carefully. Then if I was successful with one nail I would praisepraisepraise her and give her a little treat. Never hurried and never tried to do more than she was ready for. This process went on for probably a year or more a toe or several at a time. Just about a month ago, I slid up to her while she was relaxed and sleeping on my bed and quickly did ALL TOES! Much joy and happiness all around.

It is not easy and it is not quick. But with lots of treats and lots of patience and lots of joyful praise it can be done. Even if you can only clip a tiny tip of nail it is an accomplishment. Praise and treats are your best friend. Make no part of the process unpleasant.

Hmmmmm. She is sleeping on the big pillow at the front door. The clippers are there on the coffee table. Now might be a good time.
